✅ General Post-Operative Instructions for Bunion Correction

🧠 1. Anesthesia & Immediate Effects

  1. You may feel groggy or nauseated for 1–2 days after surgery.
  2. Avoid alcohol, major decisions, or risky activities.
  3. Stick to a light, low-fat diet until appetite returns.
  4. Avoid cold water—it may upset your stomach.

🚿 2. Bathing & Wound Care

  1. Some blood seepage on the splint is normal.
  2. If bleeding continues after 12 hours and exceeds 2 inches in size, contact your provider.
  3. The splint should support but not feel overly tight.
  4. Do NOT remove the splint before your first follow-up visit.

💊 3. Pain Management

  1. Pain will increase as the anesthetic wears off (6–12 hours post-surgery).
  2. Take pain meds only as needed—not on a fixed schedule.
  3. You may combine anti-inflammatory medication (e.g., ibuprofen or Aleve) if allowed by your doctor.
  4. Do not take narcotics before driving.

🧊 4. Elevation & Ice

  1. Elevate your foot above heart level to reduce swelling.
  2. Ice and elevate for at least the first 3 days.

🚫 5. Weight Bearing

  1. Do NOT put weight on the operated foot.
  2. Light resting on the ground is acceptable if necessary.

🚗 6. Driving

  1. If your left foot was operated on and you drive an automatic car, driving may be mechanically possible.
  2. Right foot surgery = no driving until cleared.
  3. Do not drive under the influence of pain medication.

📅 7. Follow-Up & Recovery Timeline

  1. 2 Weeks: Splint removal, stitches taken out, toe wrap applied, non-weight bearing cast or boot begins.
  2. 6 Weeks: X-rays taken, transition to removable boot, start gradual weight-bearing.
  3. 12 Weeks: Walking in a pool is excellent therapy.
  4. 6–9 Months: Swelling is normal and will gradually improve.
  5. Up to 18 Months: Full recovery may take this long.

👟 8. Footwear Recommendation

Proper footwear is essential for healing and preventing recurrence:
Look for:
  1. Wide toe box to reduce pressure on the bunion area
  2. Orthopedic support to realign the foot and distribute pressure
  3. Adjustable straps or stretch fabric to accommodate swelling
  4. Five-toe or bunion-friendly shoes that allow natural toe splay
🧡 We recommend PickDora’s Bunion Correction Shoes and Five-Toe Sandals — designed specifically for post-op comfort and toe alignment. They help stabilize your toes, reduce friction, and support healthy recovery.
