✅ General Post-Operative Instructions for Bunion Correction
Share
🧠 1. Anesthesia & Immediate Effects
- You may feel groggy or nauseated for 1–2 days after surgery.
- Avoid alcohol, major decisions, or risky activities.
- Stick to a light, low-fat diet until appetite returns.
- Avoid cold water—it may upset your stomach.
🚿 2. Bathing & Wound Care
- Some blood seepage on the splint is normal.
- If bleeding continues after 12 hours and exceeds 2 inches in size, contact your provider.
- The splint should support but not feel overly tight.
- Do NOT remove the splint before your first follow-up visit.
💊 3. Pain Management
- Pain will increase as the anesthetic wears off (6–12 hours post-surgery).
- Take pain meds only as needed—not on a fixed schedule.
- You may combine anti-inflammatory medication (e.g., ibuprofen or Aleve) if allowed by your doctor.
- Do not take narcotics before driving.
🧊 4. Elevation & Ice
- Elevate your foot above heart level to reduce swelling.
- Ice and elevate for at least the first 3 days.
🚫 5. Weight Bearing
- Do NOT put weight on the operated foot.
- Light resting on the ground is acceptable if necessary.
🚗 6. Driving
- If your left foot was operated on and you drive an automatic car, driving may be mechanically possible.
- Right foot surgery = no driving until cleared.
- Do not drive under the influence of pain medication.
📅 7. Follow-Up & Recovery Timeline
- 2 Weeks: Splint removal, stitches taken out, toe wrap applied, non-weight bearing cast or boot begins.
- 6 Weeks: X-rays taken, transition to removable boot, start gradual weight-bearing.
- 12 Weeks: Walking in a pool is excellent therapy.
- 6–9 Months: Swelling is normal and will gradually improve.
- Up to 18 Months: Full recovery may take this long.
👟 8. Footwear Recommendation
Proper footwear is essential for healing and preventing recurrence:
✅ Look for:
- Wide toe box to reduce pressure on the bunion area
- Orthopedic support to realign the foot and distribute pressure
- Adjustable straps or stretch fabric to accommodate swelling
- Five-toe or bunion-friendly shoes that allow natural toe splay
